Dare to Grow - Drew Houston

“There’s no growth in the comfort zone and there’s no comfort in the growth zone.” I’m not sure who

to attribute this quote to (I got it from my Dad, but I’m not sure where he got it), but it’s something that

I remind myself often. Recently, thanks to Instagram memories, I’ve been reflecting on the last year of

my life and just how true that quote is.

Around this time a year ago I moved away from my birthplace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I was born

and raised in Colorado, went to college in Colorado, and had lived in different cities in Colorado but, up

until 1 year ago, in all my *redacted* years, I had never lived outside of Colorado.

Last year, one of my best friends in college and I decided to give the roomie life another go, in a city

where we love the weather, and there’s always something to explore…. Vegas, baby!

Although, deep down, I knew this decision was the right one for me, such a major life change made me

nervous… even more than nervous, it made me downright uncomfortable! I still remember my brother

coming to see me the night before I left, noticing my pensive expression and asking “are you okay?” I

immediately burst into tears and cried “I don’t KNOW…”

Now, looking back, I do know. I was in the Growth Zone.

In the last year, I have laid the foundation for a business that I’m passionate about and will eventually

thrive and help others to do the same. I’ve added multiple certifications to my toolbelt to allow me to

support individuals and organizations in their professional and personal development. I’ve actually

grown closer to some family members back home and maintained closeness with others. I’ve made new

friends (not always easy to do as an adult)! I’ve cultivated relationships and I’ve explored and expanded

my self awareness, boundaries and power. Y’all, I have GROWN.

So, am I suggesting that you pack up your entire life and move to Las Vegas? Not necessarily. That may

not be where your growth edge is. What I am suggesting is that the next time you feel that familiar pull

to stay comfortable, ask yourself: What might I miss out on by staying where I am?

Our comfort zone is a mental space where we feel safe, secure, and in control. It’s where we avoid risk,

challenge, and discomfort. While this might seem ideal, it also means we’re not pushing ourselves to

learn, adapt, or grow. If we never face new challenges, we miss out on discovering our potential.

A few Benefits of Embracing Discomfort

1. New Opportunities: Stepping out of your comfort zone opens doors to new experiences, skills,

and connections.

2. Increased Confidence: The more you face your fears, the more you build confidence in your

ability to handle challenges.

3. Personal Growth: Every time you push past discomfort, you’re expanding your limits and

developing resilience.

Growth doesn’t come from staying where you feel safe; it comes from daring to step outside, even if it’s

just a little at a time. The journey might be uncomfortable, but it’s also where you’ll find the most

rewarding experiences. Remember, everything you’ve ever wanted is just outside your comfort zone.

Dare to grow.
